Lansing Chavez supporters gauge interest in naming street

LANSING — A group of Cesar Chavez supporters are holding a public forum to gauge interest in renaming a portion of East Grand River Avenue after the civil rights activist.

They’re seeking support to rename East Grand River Avenue between Washington and Oakland Avenues in Old Town.

Chavez was a Mexican-American civil rights activist who fought in the 1960s to better the lives of migrant farm workers. He died in 1993.

The public is invited to weigh in on the issue at a forum at 6 p.m. Thursday. It will be held at the Cristo Rey Community Center, 1717 N. High St.

The name change requires City Council approval.
