Farmworker Housing Rules OK

County commissioners voted 5-0 Wednesday to approve new regulations for the development of farmworker housing.

Under the new rules, apartment-style farmworker housing could be developed in rural areas of Polk County without a public hearing unless someone appealed a recommendation of approval by the county's Development Review Committee, which provides technical review of proposed developments.

The regulations were the product of more than a year of meetings by a task force composed of representatives from the citrus industry and rural residents.
