Migrant education program given grant
The Ventura County Office of Education was among 22 school agencies that
together received nearly $5.5 million in federal grants for the Migrant
Education Even Start program, state schools Superintendent Jack
O'Connell said Thursday.
The grants are authorized under the No Child Left Behind Act.
Migrant Education Even Start is a home- and school-based program in
which migrant parents receive services to improve their English literacy
and parenting skills.
The Ventura County Office of Education will receive $209,104.
Grants were based on the numbers of sites, migrant parents and children
ages 3 to 7 served in the area, state education officials said.
Children are considered migrant if their parents or guardians have moved
during the past three years to follow seasonal work in the agricultural,
dairy, lumber or fishing industry.
About 12,647 parents and 12,894 children across the state were enrolled
last year in the Migrant Education Even Start program, officials said.
