Program to foster migrant entrepreneurs

A new apprenticeship program slated for the fall at the local Resource Conservation and Development Office will recruit farmworkers and train them in growing organic food and starting their own operations.

The program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and will help workers run their own farms, then hire fellow farmworkers.

It will start off slowly with two farmworkers this fall but gain speed each year, said Laura Morton, with the Resource Conservation and Development Office. Farmworkers will probably be recruited by members of the Latino Community Network.
