Donation helps migrant association assist kids

The Redlands Christian Migrant Association in Immokalee, which provides migrant children with child care and early education, has received a $25,000 donation from the Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association.

The money will help sponsor 100 kids for an entire year.

RCMA, which is based in Immokalee, provides child care and early education to more than 7,000 farmworker children statewide.

Florida agriculture was among the earliest supporters of RCMA, which was established in 1965 in the Redlands farming area of southern Miami-Dade County to provide safe, nurturing surroundings for children while their parents worked in the fields.

RCMA is funded by local, state and federal grants, as well as the generosity of businesses, individuals, the United Way and other organizations. It operates more than 70 centers, including two charter schools, in rural Florida.
