Vigil to protest immigrant act
 

AVON PARK -- A candlelight vigil to oppose the Avon Park Illegal Immigration Relief Act, a proposed city ordinance that takes a get-tough stance on illegal immigration, is set for tonight in Avon Park.

A public hearing and vote on the ordinance is scheduled by the City Council at 6 p.m. on Monday.

The vigil has been organized by the Florida Immigrant Coalition and Farmworker Association of Florida and is set for 6 to 7 p.m. in Donaldson Park across from Avon Park City Hall on Main Street. Avon Park is south down U.S. Highway 27 about 45 miles south of Interstate 4.
